Mike Mejia

Mike MejiaThe brainchild of strength and conditioning specialist Mike Mejia, B.A.S.E. Sports Conditioning was formed to help better educate athletes, coaches and parents about the intricacies involved in training developing young bodies. In a time when youth athletics are more competitive than ever, the trend towards early specialization and "sports-specific" training programs have contributed to a dramatic rise in injuries among both prepubescent and adolescent athletes. So much so in fact, that overuse injuries that used to be seen only in collegiate and professional level competitors are now becoming more common in children as young as 10 years old. In an effort to buck this disturbing trend, B.A.S.E. Sports Conditioning aims to steer athletes away from the famed "Bigger, Stronger, Faster" mindset; instead providing them with a more well-rounded approach to athletic conditioning. By focusing on things such as proper postural alignment, core strength and enhancing mobility, the B.A.S.E. system aims to improve overall athleticism- rather than simply preparing the athlete's body to excel in a single sport. It's an approach that not only results in increased resistance to injury, thus keeping athletes on the field longer, but also produces the kind of dramatic improvements in strength, speed and stamina that athletes and coaches covet.

The former director of his own sports conditioning facility, Mike Mejia has been perfecting the B.A.S.E. system for well over a decade. Drawing from his Masters level education in Exercise Science, as well as certifications with both the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the International Youth Conditioning Association, Mike has developed an approach to youth athletic development that is truly unique. In addition to having worked with hundreds of athletes in sports such as ice-hockey, swimming, tennis, soccer, lacrosse, softball, basketball and football, Mike is also an accomplished freelance writer. He currently writes regular columns for both Men's Health and Splash magazine (the official publication of USA swimming) and is the strength and conditioning expert for the Swimnetwork.com website. The author of several successful books on strength training, his most notable titles include "The Men's Health Better Body Blueprint" and "Scrawny to Brawny". Mike also currently serves as the dryland conditioning coach for the Half Hollow Hills Swim Club.
