I watched Cesar Cielo swim the 50 m Free last week. He went a 22.14, and did not take a single breath. I have never heard of this. Granted, for me I would be holding my breath for 5 more seconds. Is this the goal, not to breath at all on a 50? Seems crazy. What do you typically recommend.
Breathing in 50
No breathing in a 50 is fairly common with elite sprinters. However, there are a lot of very fast swimmers out there who breathe on a 50. A lot of times a swimmer who tries not breathing in a 50 ends up actually going slower than if they took a breath or two. The key is maintaining your tempo. Practice doing some no breathing swims and try to get comfortable hold your breath. A lot of trial and error is involved. I do believe that swimming while holding your breath is faster than swimming with breathing but yoy need to find what is right for you.
