Swim Bench

Swim Bench

Many swim teams implement swim bench as their dryland workout for their distance swimmer.  First of all swim bench hardly mimics the motions associated with swimming. The idea that a pure horizontal position is sustained in any stroke is wrong.  This error should not be ingrained in swimmers.  Moreover, how much can you train a distance swimmer with endurance?  In my opinion and experience, distance swimmers need to utilize the weight room more than any other type of swimmer to help prevent injuries as well as maximize muscle efficiency.  These two categories are wasted with a swimmer on swim bench as well as implementing improper movement patterns, sounds like a waste of a few hundred dollars. The one benefit of swim bench is to mimic a high catch, but studies indicate having someone work on one aspect of walking does not translate to improved walking, therefore does having a swimmer work on one part of their stroke improve their swimming?
